"La ciudad indiscreta" is the web where we present our projects MINECO: MINECO 2012-14 and MINECO 2016-18.

MINECO 2016-18 (GESTURDRON)

Management of tourist's experiences in congested urban tourist spaces through the use of Drones

The project "Management of tourist's experiences in congested urban tourist spaces” has two main objectives: 1/ Identify the impact of time/space congestion on tourist’s visit experience and satifaction; 2/ Analyse tourist’s behaviour only in congested spaces, as well as knowledge of the grade of congestion of specific spaces in different time periods. Both objectives have as a final goal to provide the necessary information to ellaborate tourist management proposals that enhance tourist’s satisfaction and generate tourist flows that better satisfy tourists and the managment of urban spaces. These proposals are of great interest for stakeholders such as municipalities, tourist promotion entities and the private sector, since they are oriented towards social and economic sustainability of the tourist activity in a urban destination.

Necesary information for those objectives are to come from three sources. The first one is already available, as it was obtained from a previous granted research (MINECO CSO2011- 26634); the other two are to be obtained with this project. They are: 1/information on tourist space and time behaviour (flows, itineraries, time consumption determinants, etc.); 2//information on the degree of congestion in already identified crowded spaces, and tourist behaviour in those spaces (this information will be obtained with the aid of DRON; 3/ information related to tourists: through on site questionnaires to tourists, on their perception of congestion, and how it affects their tourist expericence and consumption (change of places visited, satisfaction, intentions to recommend the city, etc.).

The project proposal is one step further of a broader research line started some time ago by the research team (see CVs) and the research derived from the previous MINECO (e.g. Martínez, Raya and Galí, 2015, under submission in Tourism Management; and other research outputs in which we’re still working since specific suitable data from the project was not available until the end of 2014).

When implementing the different actions of knowledge transfer and dissemination of knowledge in the previous MINECO project (although that one was more centered in the analysis of the tourist image), interacting with interested stakeholders, we observed that the proposal of actions as the ones intended in this project, would require further information. This information is the one we’re to obtain with the present project.

The project includes DRON (unmanned aircraft), to capture overhead images of tourists, suitable for capturing tourist’s behaviour in congested spaces and to analyse the degree of congestion. This technology allows to directly observe individual behaviour without their direct participation; this methodology has very interesting properties for a suitable analysis of human behaviour.

Influence of the image on tourists behaviour in monumental cities

Monumental cities are spaces in which tourism’ demand and supply have increased a lot, in a national and international level. In Spain this trend coincides with the peak of the tourism in monumental European and Asian cities. As a result of this increasing interest for the culture, the rehabilitation processes of spaces and historical places have increased steadily. At the same time, short-distances trips have increased too.

The project “Influence of the image on tourists behaviour in monumental cities”, has as a main purpose identify the behaviour of visitors in monumental cities and the effect of previous image, with the aim to propose managing tools which help to reduce the impact and increase standards of living in these areas. The goal is to improve the management of the destiny in five main areas: image of the destiny, direct and indirect information for the visitor, main and secondary flows, nodes’ hierarchy and the management based on clusters.

The results, from the previous studies related to image of destinies, has the purpose to assess the effect of image in the behaviour of visitors and in the other variables. Including the most recent findings in the registers of itineraries from GPS, it allows to draw exactly patterns of behaviour of visitors and the interaction produced between tourists and the city. The scope of the work takes place in monumental cities which are registering high levels of visitors in very specific areas. This has effects on local people as well as in the quality of the visit of the tourist.

The itineraries will be collected in three representative cities corresponding to the three models of urban destinies: mononodes cities, polinodes cities and diffuse cities. The information collected by GPS will allow us to register the social use of tourist spaces and identify the flows of access, the flow of agitation, density areas and the unblocking spaces. Secondly, the information collected by surveys will allow us to link the behaviour in the space with different variables analysed in researches of image: sociodemographical features of the visitor, conditions of the visit, previous information and previous images of the destiny.
